Medical Care in Qatar:

1.Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC):

In 1982 the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) was founded. All hospitals, health centers and outpatient clinics were brought under its umbrella. HMC was also entrusted with running the Primary Health Care Clinics throughout the country. Now all major operations such as kidney transplant, plastic, open heart and cardiovascular surgeries are carried out locally. Among the internationally reputed hospitals HMC is affiliated with, for consultations and exchange of expertise, are Mayo Clinic, Cornell Medical School , and Thorax Center in the Netherlands. LINK

A doctor per 500 people:

By the end of 1998 the number of qualified medical staff employed by the Ministry of Public Health and Hamad Medical Corporation had risen to 4,500.  The total number of beds in the four government hospitals stood at over 1,250.The establishment of the Hamad International Medical Training Centre in 2000 enhanced the efficiency of the nursing staff in the Corporation. The doctor- patient ratio rose to 500 patients for every doctor,   3 dentists and 51 nurses for every 10000 people, one of the highest ratios in the Arab countries. The number of medical staff steadily increased. By the end of 2003 there were 939 doctors and 2,688 nurses at HMC.

2. Ash-shamal Hospital

Work on Ash-shamal hospital, located midway between Al Khor and Al Zakhera,  began in March 2000. The hospital occupies 192,500 square meters of which 20,000 square meters will be set aside for the ancillary buildings, landscaping and parking lots accommodating 320 cars.

The total cost of the project will be QR 85 million, and the bed capacity will be 100. The hospital will have an obstetrics and gynecology section, an emergency and accidents section, operating theaters, a morgue, laboratories and pharmacies.
Four hospitals will be built including 3 specialized hospitals affiliated to HMC. One, with 96 beds will be for heart diseases; the second with 350 beds will be pediatrics and the third with 80 beds for orthopedics.
