The Press in Qatar
 

Journalism came into existence in Qatar back in 1970s in response to the rapid developments which the Qatari society had undergone in all walks of cultural, economic and social life.

There are five daily newspapers published in Qatar: three in Arabic and two in English. The Arabic dailies come out seven days a week round the year, even on national and religious holidays. The English newspapers take a day off on Fridays.

Arabic Newspapers

  • Al Rayah
  •            

    Al Rayah is the oldest Arabic newspaper in Qatar. It was established in 1979. It was published by Al Khaleej for Printing, Publishing & Distribution as a weekly till 27 January 1980 before it went daily. 

  • Al-Sharq
  • A daily political newspaper, established in 1987 and published by Dar Al-Sharq Printing, Publishing & Distribution.

  • Al Watan
  •  

    An independent political daily newspaper, established in 1995 and published by Dar Al Watan Printing, Publishing & Distribution.

    English Newspapers

  • Gulf Times
  • Issued by Gulf  Publishing & Printing Company,  Gulf Times is the first newspaper in Qatar to have been published in English. It was established in December 1978 as a weekly till 22 February 1981 before it went daily. 

  • Peninsula

    A daily newspaper issued by Dar Al-Sharq Printing, Publishing & Distribution.

    Magazines

    • Al Saqir Sports Magazine

    The first issue came out in 1976, and ten years later it discontinued for 14 years, then it resumed publication with a new look in 2000.
     

    Al Jazeera Satellite Channel (JSC)
     

     

    Al Jazeera (JSC) is the first independent Arabic all-news satellite TV channel serving audience in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe.

    With a humble start of 6-hour transmission a day, JSC went on air on 1 November 1996.  Two months later the transmission time increased to 9 hours a day, to 12 hours in June 1997 and to 18 hours in its first anniversary. By its second anniversary JSC had transmitted round the clock.

    JSC transmission reaches the Arab World from the Gulf  Region to as far as Mauritania and Morocco, Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada across Africa.

    Al-Jazeera's more than 700-strong staff, experts in their own fields, comes from Arab as well as foreign countries, not to mention a network of highly qualified reporters fully capable of conducting interviews on the scene and covering news live in more than 35 locations around the world.

    The channel made its online debut of the Arabic web site of Al Jazeera in January 2001,  with a dedicated news portal (
    www.aljazeera.net ) offering complete transcriptions and audio recordings of all programs broadcast by Al Jazeera.

    JSC launched the English version of Al Jazeera net in early September 2003 so that English-speaking people can keep updated and interact with the events.

    Among other things, JSC airs detailed and comprehensive political and sports news. Economic news are backed up by live briefing from reporters in international financial centers in London and New York.

    "Al Jazeera Documentary" is another service which JSC  seeks to launch in the second half of 2004. Besides setting up a specialized Sports Channel, JSC is planning to establish a  media rehabilitation and training center.
